Some things every Catholic should know about Extreme Unction

Extreme Unction is the Sacrament which, through the anointing and prayer of the priest, gives health and strength to the soul, and sometimes to the body, when a Catholic is in danger of death from sickness.

Recipient must be a baptized Catholic and past the age of reason (7 years old).

Must be in immediate danger of death (they could die at any minute). In this case, it is an emergency.

OR is in proximate danger of death (they could die any time in the next few days or weeks). This would be considered urgent but not emergency.

OR from old age (70 years and older). This would be considered a non-urgent case.

In these cases, you should ascertain when the person last received Extreme Unction.

It may be given as often as a person recovering from one attack of sickness is in danger of death by another. In a lingering illness, it may be repeated after some months.

Always err on the side of caution and call sooner rather than later so the recipient may receive the great consolation of consciously experiencing the Sacramental touch of our Lord in their last moments.

If a loved one is in danger of death, please call the priest ASAP: 239-360-9977. Mark the difference between emergency, urgent, and non-urgent.
