Laws of Fasting and Abstinence

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics.
In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.  Abstinence under the current practice begins on one's 14th birthday.

Fasting under the current practice applies to everyone aged 18 to 59, inclusive. One full meal is permitted, and two other meals may be taken which, when combined, are less than a full meal.

It is only the current law that binds under sin.

Abstinence from the 1962 discipline begins on one's 7th birthday. Complete abstinence on all Fridays of the year, Ash Wednesday, Holy Saturday, and the Vigil of Christmas. Partial abstinence all the days of Lent, Ember Wednesdays and Saturdays and the Vigils of Pentecost and the Assumption (meat and soup or gravy made from meat permitted once a day at the principle meal)

Abstinence from meat is dispensed on Holy Days of Obligation

Fasting from the 1962 discipline applies for everyone 21 to 59 on the days of Lent from Ash Wednesday inclusive, Ember days, and Vigils of Christmas, Pentecost, and the Assumption. One full meal permitted and two other meals may be taken which, when combined, are less than a full meal.

Join the Novena to Defeat Florida's Abortion Amendment

The bishops invite you to join in a 9-day novena to defeat this proposed amendment and specifically to pray for the justices of the Florida Supreme Court who heard oral arguments related to the validity of the amendment language on February 7th. Kindly keep them in your prayers.

Sign Up to Receive an Email Reminder Each Day of the Novena

The political committee behind a proposed constitutional amendment that would legalize abortion up until birth in Florida has surpassed the petition signature requirement for placement on the November 2024 ballot. For ballot placement to be confirmed, the amendment language must be reviewed by the Florida Supreme Court to ensure it is clear and limited to a single subject.

If your child is interested in joining a schola you can register here. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Rutherford at [email protected] for more information.

There is a small registration fee per semester (Fall & Spring) so as to provide a stipend for our generous instructors for their wonderful service for your children and the whole community.

2nd child: subtract $50

Family maximum: $110 per semester
