Guidelines for Fasting and Abstinence

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals/snacks that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. If one wishes to freely observe the older discipline in force in 1962 (and thus not currently obligatory), one may see those rules at https://materdeiparish.com/laws-days-abstinence-penance-fast/

Naples Prayer Walk and 40 days for Life

Now more than ever, we are called to resist the horror of abortion in our country and in the world. As faithful Catholics, we have two upcoming opportunities to voice our opposition to this great evil ~

The 40 Days for Life Prayer Walk marks the opening of 40 Days for Life on Ash Wednesday, March 6. Bishop Frank Dewane will celebrate 8 AM Mass at St William Catholic Church, after which he will lead us all in prayer (around 9 AM) on the public street outside Planned Parenthood (Creech Rd and Goodlette-Frank Rd).

Additionally, the members of Corpus Christi Chapel are committed to offer a day of prayer outside Planned Parenthood. Our day is Friday, April 12 (feast of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary). Sign-up will soon be available on-line for 1-hour time slots, between the hours of 8:45 AM and 4:00 PM. A minimum of two people per hour is suggested; more than two is highly recommended. Please watch the bulletin for future information regarding the sign-up process.  Please contact our Pro-Life coordinator Joy Behe for more information (919) 602-7345

Plenary Indulgence on Fridays in Lent- Prayer before a Crucifix

Under the typical conditions (sacramental communion, confession 3 weeks before or after, and prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father), the recitation of the "Prayer before a Crucifix" gains a plenary indulgence on Fridays during Lent.
"Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus, while before Thy face I humbly kneel and, with burning soul, pray and beseech Thee to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity; true contrition for my sins, and a firm purpose of amendment. While I contemplate, with great love and tender pity, Thy five most precious wounds, pondering over them within me and calling to mind the words which David, Thy prophet, said of Thee, my Jesus: They have pierced My hands and My feet, they have numbered all My bones. Amen."
The prayer can be found in the red misallette at Mass on pg. 65
